Indoor Pollution Fighting Plants
There are many indoor air contaminants that are inescapable since they come from furniture, drapes, carpets, insulation, cleaning agents, paint, paper towels, facial tissues, inks, plastics...just about everything! You can clean the air by placing any or all of the following plants:
Spider Plant: Very easy to grow in indirect or bright, diffused light.
Peace Lily: Very easy to grow in low-light location.
Chinese Evergreen: Very easy to grow in low-light location.
Weeping Fig: Fairly easy to grow but requires a little special attention. Needs indirect or bright, diffused light.
Golden Pothos: Very easy to grow in indirect or bright, diffused light.
One plant will remove up to 87 percent of toxic organic pollutants in 100 square foot area. A plant in each room should be adequate.
Flat Club Soda -- Don't throw away your fizzless club soda. It has just the right chemicals to add vigor and color to your plants.
Save that Water -- Save the water you have boiled potatoes or eggs in. It's nutrient-rich and when cool, is ideal for watering houseplants. OR After steaming vegetables, use the leftover water for houseplants. It is full of vitamins that make plants flourish.
No Gravel for Drainage? -- Instead of using Gravel, line the bottom of a flowerpot by cutting a sponge to size. It will absorb water better and keep dirt from sifting out. This is also a good way to recycle old sponges.
OR Try using nutshells after cracking nuts. They work nicely in the bottom of flowerpots for drainage.
OR Put the "Plastic Peanuts" used in shipping packing in the bottom of the flowerpots. They are light-weight but still allow for drainage.
